She is a renowned contemporary Navajo folk artist who grew up on a Navajo sheep herding farm in New Mexico. She began making sun baked mud figure toys for a local trader to sell. Soon she added bits of cloth and painted details on the faces. It wasn’t long before she began creating cardboard collages, cut-out figures dressed in cloth and water color paintings made on cardboard.
An unusually creative person, Mamie painted esoteric animals, as well as familiar reservation scenes. She was born in 1920 and raised in the traditional Navajo culture. Her folk art is highly valued by collectors and museums such as the Wheelwright and Heard Museums.
